Chapter 4
Lily did not take the ledger to Grant.
That choice surprised even her.
A month earlier, she would have assumed anything involving the Whitmore family needed a Whitmore to solve it.
Now she made copies and contacted a Virginia attorney who handled property and employment matters.
She paid for the consultation herself.
The answer was complicated.
The housing trust still existed.
It had never been dissolved.
Several cottages had been renovated and reassigned, but the underlying trust restrictions remained recorded with the county.
Lily’s situation required review, but the attorney was clear about one thing:
“No one should have represented this cottage to you as ordinary employee housing without examining the trust terms.”
Lily drove home with both hands tight on the steering wheel.
Her father had not been imagining things.
He had been protecting something.
She requested her housing records from Whitmore Hall.
That brought Grant to her office the next morning.
“Why are you requesting trust documents?”
Lily closed her laptop.
“Because my father kept records.”
She showed him the copied ledger.
Grant read quietly.
When he reached his father’s name, his expression changed.
“I’ll handle it.”
“No.”
Grant looked up.
Lily almost smiled at his surprise.
“I have an attorney.”
“You hired a lawyer?”
“Yes.”
“Lily, if the estate made a mistake—”
“That sentence is why I hired one.”
He leaned back.
She continued.
“I’m not accusing you. But your family owns the company that employs the people affected by this trust. You’re not neutral.”
Grant looked at the ledger again.
“You’re right.”
She had not expected that.
“I’ll authorize full access to the records,” he said. “But your attorney can review them independently.”
“Thank you.”
“And if the company violated the trust, it gets corrected for everyone. Not only you.”
Something in Lily softened.
“That’s what my father would have wanted.”
Grant ran his thumb over Daniel’s handwriting.
“I think that may be why he kept writing to me.”
The estate archives provided the answer.
Daniel had discovered that Richard Whitmore had been gradually treating trust cottages as ordinary company property. Nobody had been thrown into the street, but protections intended for longtime employees had been quietly ignored as workers retired, died or moved.
Daniel objected.
Richard considered the trust outdated and administratively inconvenient.
Neither man backed down.
And when Daniel tried to contact Grant, his letters joined Lily’s in Richard’s private files.
Grant confronted his father privately.
Lily learned the result only afterward.
Richard did not deny it.
He came to see Lily himself.
At seventy-one, Richard Whitmore still carried the authority that had intimidated employees for decades.
He stood in Lily’s garden looking at lavender planted by her mother.
“I owe you an apology,” he said.
Lily waited.
“I intercepted correspondence between you and Grant.”
“Why?”
“Because I thought I was protecting his future.”
“From me?”
“From distraction.”
Lily almost smiled.
“What an elegant word.”
Richard’s mouth tightened.
“You were children.”
“I was sixteen when my mother died.”
He looked away.
“You kept the letter where I told Grant I needed him.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because he was at university overseas, struggling with obligations he wasn’t ready for. He wanted to abandon a summer program and come home after he learned your mother was ill.”
“And that would have destroyed his life?”
“At the time, I believed attachment to this place would keep him from becoming what he needed to become.”
Lily understood then.
Richard had not hated her.
That almost made it worse.
He had simply considered her small enough to remove.
“And my father?”
“He challenged me over the housing trust.”
“So you ignored his letters too.”
“I told myself Grant didn’t need to be involved in estate administration yet.”
“You told yourself a lot.”
“Yes.”
The admission carried no self-pity.
Richard looked older than Lily remembered.
“I cannot undo it.”
“No.”
“But the housing records will be corrected.”
“For everyone?”
“Yes.”
“Not as a favor to me.”
“No. Because they should have been.”
Lily nodded.
That was enough for the property issue.
It was not enough for everything else.
Richard seemed to understand.
As he turned away, Lily asked, “Did you tell Caroline about the letters?”
He stopped.
“I told her there had been an attachment between you and Grant that I had discouraged.”
“Did you tell her you intercepted our mail?”
“Eventually.”
“When?”
“Before the engagement announcement.”
Lily closed her eyes briefly.
Caroline had known much longer than she admitted.
That evening, Grant found Lily packing books.
“Caroline left.”
Lily looked up.
“Left where?”
“She went back to Richmond.”
“Grant, I don’t think I should—”
“She asked for an annulment consultation.”
Lily froze.
The wedding had happened less than two weeks earlier.
Grant sat on the edge of an empty packing box.
“She says she knew before we married that I wasn’t certain, and she married me anyway because she thought certainty would come afterward.”
Lily lowered herself into a chair.
“Did you tell her you wanted an annulment?”
“I told her I wouldn’t pretend this was a marriage either of us deserved.”
Lily studied him.
“And if I weren’t here?”
Grant took his time answering.
“I would still have to deal with the fact that I married someone because it was convenient for our families.”
That was the first answer he had given her that did not make Lily feel responsible.
Grant stood.
“I don’t know what happens with Caroline. Lawyers will deal with what can legally happen. I’m not asking you to wait.”
“Good.”
“And I’m not asking you to stay.”
That hurt differently.
Then he added, “I think leaving is probably the bravest thing you’ve done in years.”
Lily looked at him.
Grant smiled faintly.
“You always hated when I was right.”
“You were almost never right.”
“There she is.”
For one brief moment, they were children again.
Then Lily looked at the half-packed room.
“I start in Charlottesville next month.”
“I know.”
“I’m going.”
“I know.”
Grant walked toward the door.
“Grant.”
He turned.
Lily wanted to say a hundred things.
Instead she asked, “Did you really draw me a house beside the creek?”
His smile disappeared.
“I remember every window.”
Then he left her standing among the boxes.
