Chapter 3

Story: She Served Champagne at the Billionaire’s Wedding—Then the Scent of Lavender Made Him Remember the Promise He Had Broken

Lily’s hand stopped halfway to the cottage door.

“How?”

“Grant’s father told me.”

“When?”

“Last year.”

Lily stared at Caroline.

“And you said nothing?”

“No.”

“Why?”

Caroline’s jaw tightened.

“Because Grant and I were negotiating a future involving two companies, two boards, hundreds of employees and families who had spent years expecting this marriage.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

“It’s the answer you don’t like.”

“You knew someone had deliberately kept Grant and me from communicating.”

“I knew old letters had been withheld. I didn’t know every detail.”

“And you married him anyway.”

“Yes.”

Lily took a slow breath.

“You need to tell Grant.”

“I will.”

“When?”

“When I understand exactly what his father did.”

“No. You don’t get to investigate your way into a more convenient version of the truth.”

Caroline stepped closer.

“And you don’t get to lecture me about a marriage you’ve wanted since childhood.”

The words landed.

Lily could have struck back.

Instead, she said, “That’s exactly why I’m leaving.”

Caroline’s anger faltered.

“I loved Grant,” Lily continued. “Maybe part of me still does. But he married you. I’m not going to stand around hoping your marriage fails.”

Caroline studied her.

“Then why are you helping him with the letters?”

“I’m not. He found them. He told me.”

“And if he discovers he would have come back for you?”

Lily looked toward the estate house.

“Then he’ll have to live with what happened.”

“And you?”

“So will I.”

Caroline left without another word.
