Chapter 6 - What Love Could Not Excuse
Spring arrived before the truth stopped feeling new.
Richard recovered enough to return home, though he permanently stepped away from company leadership.
The housing trust corrections were completed under outside legal review.
Grant also changed estate mail procedures and employee grievance policies—not as dramatic gestures, but because systems built around one powerful person’s discretion had allowed Richard’s choices to go unchallenged.
Caroline and Grant remained separated.
Their divorce took time.
During that time, Lily and Grant did something far harder than falling into each other’s arms.
They kept boundaries.
They spoke occasionally.
They did not date.
They did not kiss.
Grant visited Martha, his father and the estate, but never used those visits as an excuse to appear at Lily’s apartment.
Lily built a life that no longer depended on whether he came.
Then, nearly a year after the wedding, Caroline asked to meet Lily.
They chose a coffee shop in Charlottesville.
Caroline arrived alone.
She looked different without the polished perfection of the wedding.
Not diminished.
Simply human.
“I owe you an apology,” she said.
Lily waited.
“For the wedding.”
“You already admitted it was wrong.”
“I admitted it because I wanted the conversation over.”
That was honest enough to make Lily listen.
Caroline wrapped both hands around her coffee.
“I put you at the head table because I wanted to prove something.”
“That Grant didn’t love me?”
“That he loved me enough not to notice you.”
Lily looked down.
Caroline gave a humorless smile.
“Then you walked in carrying champagne, and he looked at you like he’d heard a song he thought he’d forgotten.”
“The lavender.”
“I learned that later.”
Lily remembered Grant turning beneath the flower arch.
“I hated you for about ten minutes,” Caroline said. “Then I realized the person I was really angry with was myself.”
“Why did you marry him?”
“The same reason he married me. It made sense.”
“That’s a terrible reason.”
“It’s an excellent reason for a merger.”
Lily laughed despite herself.
Caroline did too.
Then the laughter faded.
“My parents treated marriage like part of succession planning. Richard did the same with Grant. I told myself we were sophisticated enough to build love afterward.”
“Maybe some people can.”
“Maybe.”
Caroline looked at her.
“But I knew about those letters. That’s the part I can’t excuse.”
“No.”
“I thought if Grant knew before the wedding, he might question everything.”
“He did question everything.”
“Yes. Just later.”
Caroline’s eyes dropped to the table.
“I cost both of us time because I was afraid of losing a future I hadn’t even asked whether I wanted.”
Lily understood that more than she wished to.
For years, she had done something quieter but similar.
She had stayed at Whitmore Hall because leaving felt like betraying her past.
“You did hurt me,” Lily said.
“I know.”
“But I don’t want your life ruined.”
Caroline looked up.
“It isn’t.”
That answer mattered.
“I’m moving to Chicago after everything is finalized,” Caroline said. “Ashford is opening a new office there. My father thinks I’m being dramatic.”
“Are you?”
“Probably.”
Lily smiled.
“Good.”
They parted without friendship.
But also without hatred.
Sometimes closure was not an embrace.
Sometimes it was two women finally refusing to pretend the choices of powerful families were destiny.
Grant’s divorce became final months later.
He did not call Lily that day.
He waited another six weeks.
Then a handwritten envelope arrived at her apartment.
No flowers.
No expensive gift.
Inside was one sheet of paper.
Lily,
I spent years thinking the tragedy was that our letters were stolen.
It wasn’t.
The tragedy was that when silence replaced you, I accepted it too easily.
My father made choices for me. Caroline made choices out of fear. I made choices because they were convenient, and I’m responsible for mine.
I don’t want the house I drew when I was twelve.
I don’t want the life other people designed for me either.
I’d like dinner with you.
One dinner.
Not at Whitmore Hall.
Not beside the creek.
Somewhere neither of us has been before.
If the answer is no, I’ll respect it.
Grant
Lily sat at her tiny dining table beneath the mustard-yellow curtains.
She read the letter again.
Then she opened the dresser drawer where she kept the wooden lavender bottle.
For most of her life, that bottle had represented a promise.
Now she understood it differently.
It represented a boy who had once cared enough to carve something badly with his own hands.
Nothing more.
Nothing less.
She did not owe that boy her future.
But she was allowed to meet the man he had become.
Lily took out her phone.
She typed:
One dinner.
Then she added:
And if you choose somewhere with a dress code, I’m leaving.
His answer came two minutes later.
I remember you pushed me into a creek once.
Don’t threaten me with a good time.
Lily laughed so loudly her upstairs neighbor knocked on the floor.
She looked at her father’s final letter on the refrigerator.
Home is supposed to be a place you choose.
For the first time, Lily understood that the sentence was not only about houses.
She picked up her phone again.
Saturday. Seven.
Grant replied:
I’ll be there.
Lily set the phone down.
She was smiling.
But she was not waiting.
