Packers Collapse vs. Vikings, and Fans Turn on Matt LaFleur
Matt LaFleur has coached the Green Bay Packers through division titles and playoff runs. On Sunday, he heard something different from the home crowd.
Green Bay blew a fourth-quarter lead against the Minnesota Vikings, and the frustration inside Lambeau Field spilled straight toward the head coach.
The Vikings won behind Carson Wentz, who led four consecutive touchdown drives. Four possessions, four scores. That is not a stat line most people saw coming from a backup-turned-starter in Week 1.
Green Bay's defense had no answer when it mattered most. Penalties extended Minnesota drives in the fourth quarter, and the Packers' offense couldn't close the door when it had the chance.
The pattern is familiar to anyone who watched this team last season. Another late lead, another late collapse. ESPN reported the Packers are now "searching for answers" — a phrase that gets harder to hear every time it's used.
What made Sunday worse was the context. This was a division game at home, against a Vikings team many expected to take a step back. Instead, Minnesota left with a win and Green Bay left with questions.
LaFleur's seat is not literally hot in September. But the fan reaction on social media and sports radio told a story the standings don't. Green Bay has Super Bowl expectations every year. Losing this way in Week 1 cuts deeper than the record shows.
The Packers now face a short week to fix what went wrong. The defense has to figure out why it couldn't stop a quarterback who wasn't even the starter a month ago. The offense has to learn how to finish.
And LaFleur has to show that this team is different from the one that keeps letting leads slip away. If Sunday becomes a pattern, the noise around him will only get louder.
